    To revile someone is to attack them with ugly, hateful words. You do not just disagree; you pour scorn on them. News stories say a crowd reviled a leader, or that a person was reviled as a liar. It is a strong word, more at home in writing and formal speech than in a café. In everyday talk, people say insult, abuse, or say terrible things about. Revile often turns up when the hatred is public — , religion, or a person the crowd has turned against. You can revile a person or, a little more loosely, revile an idea or a piece of work.

組成From Middle English revilen, from re- + Old French aviler (“to make vile or cheap”), from a- + vil (“vile, cheap”). At heart it is “to make vile.”
