A retrial is when a court hears a law case again, after a first trial has already finished. The first result is put to one side, and the whole case is told to the court one more time — often with a new group of people who decide. This is a formal courtroom word; you meet it in the news, not at the dinner table. People ask for a retrial when they think the first hearing was not fair: maybe an important fact was hidden, or the court made a serious mistake. Though actually, losing is not enough. A court above, or the law itself, has to agree that the first trial was damaged before a retrial can happen. An appeal is a bit different: an appeal asks a higher court to check the old trial; a retrial starts the hearing over.
