Restructuring is the act of changing how a big thing is set up — a company, a government, a school system, a bank — so the pieces sit in a new shape. Who reports to whom, which teams exist, what gets sold or closed: that is the territory. You meet the word in news and in business talk, not much at the dinner table. Though actually, people often reach for it when things are going badly. A firm is losing money, so it “restructures.” The tidy dictionary picture is a cleaner organisation. The messy truth is that restructuring often means joining teams, shutting a site, or asking people to leave, even while the people at the top call it a fresh start. Banks also restructure debt, which is a quieter use: they change when and how the money must be paid back, rather than changing the office chart. It is a formal word. A friend is more likely to say they are changing everything around, or cutting jobs.
