Restitution is the act of giving back something that was lost or stolen, or of paying for damage, so the owner is put as close as possible to where they were before. Courts order restitution; a thief may have to make restitution. It is a formal, legal word, not dinner-table talk. It is not restoration, which is repairing an old building or a painting so it looks as it used to. Though actually, in physics the same word appears in “coefficient of restitution,” which is about how bouncy a collision is — a specialist use, not the one meet first.
