If something is resplendent, it is so bright, rich, or well dressed that people stop and look. A person can be resplendent in a gold dress; a temple can be resplendent with lanterns; a bird can be resplendent in red and green feathers. The word carries a little theatre: it is not the everyday word for pretty. Beautiful is the simple word; resplendent is the one you reach for when the scene shines. It is more at home in stories, news about ceremonies, and careful description than in a text to a friend. Though actually, it does not have to mean expensive — sunlight on wet leaves can be resplendent too — but it always means striking to the eye, not merely “quite nice.”
組成From Latin resplendere (“to shine back, glitter”), from re- + splendere (“to shine”); or from resplend + -ent. Related older English splendish meant “to shine.”
