Respiration is the process of breathing — air going into and out of the body so that you can live. Doctors and science teachers use this word far more than ordinary conversation does; at home you just say breathing. In a hospital you might hear “respiration rate,” which is how many times a person breathes in one minute. Though actually, in biology the same word also covers a quieter process inside your cells, where sugar and oxygen are used to make energy. You cannot see that as the chest moving. Both uses share the idea of taking in what life needs and sending something out. The meaning you meet first is the lungs; the school-science meaning is the cells.
組成From Middle English respiracioun, borrowed from Latin respiratio, respirationem (the act of breathing).
