A repercussion is an effect that follows an action or an event — especially a bad effect that does not finish when the first moment finishes. You make a choice today; the repercussions may still be landing weeks or years later, on you or on other people. The word almost always leans toward trouble: lost jobs, broken trust, a town that never quite recovers. Writers often use the plural, repercussions, because one act can send out several . Though actually, it is not a fancy word for any result at all. A good result is more often just an effect or a consequence. Repercussion has a serious, slightly formal feel; you will hear it in news and in careful talk, less in a child's story. The old picture behind it is a blow that bounces back.
