Renunciation is the act of formally giving something up — a belief, a title, a way of life, or a claim to money or power. Someone may make a renunciation of violence, of a religion they no longer follow, or of the right to a throne. Though actually, this is a heavy, official word. Friends do not use it for quitting sugar. They give it up or quit. You meet renunciation in law, in church and temple language, and in history. It names the decision as a public or solemn act, not just a quiet change of mind. It is a noun; the verb next to it is renounce.
