A remix is a new version of a recorded song. Someone takes the original recording and changes it — a new beat, extra voices, a longer dance ending, a quieter piano version. DJs and producers make remixes for clubs, radio, and the internet. The word is also a verb: to remix a track. Younger speakers stretch it a long way: a “remix” of a film, a joke, even a recipe, meaning a fresh take on something that already exists. That looser use is common online. In careful talk about music, a remix still means a new mix of an existing recording, not just any cover or copy. A cover is when someone sings the song again themselves; a remix starts from the old recording and works on that. Informal to neutral; you will hear it constantly around pop music.
