To remaster a record, a film, or (these days) a game is to go back to the original master — the best stored copy — and make a new version that sounds or looks cleaner, using newer tools, often a computer. Noise drops, colours step forward, quiet details show. The word is also a noun: a remaster, the 2024 remaster. Music shops, old-film work, and game re-releases live on it. Though actually, better is the shop promise, not a law. A remaster can be too loud, too sharp, or not to a fan's taste; some people still prefer the old press. And master here is not a person in charge. It is the master copy, the source tape or file that other copies are made from. In Taiwan, everyday talk often keeps the English word.
組成re- (again) + master (the master copy of a recording). The re- piece comes down from Latin through French and Middle English. Same build for the verb and the noun.
