To remarry is to marry again after an earlier marriage has ended. Either person can remarry; people say he remarried, she never remarried, they remarried later in life. It is the ordinary verb of this family. You hear it in family stories, in news about public people, and on forms that ask about married life. Though actually, it does not mean a second wedding piled on top of a first marriage that still stands — that is a different, and usually not legal, situation. Remarry assumes the earlier marriage is over. The word is calm and a little careful; at the table people may just say got married again.
組成re- (again) + marry. The re- piece comes down from Latin through French and Middle English.
