A relapse is a return to a bad state after things seemed to be getting better — most often used about illness or bad habits. If someone recovers from an illness and then gets sick again with the same thing, doctors call that a relapse. If someone stops smoking, drinking, or using drugs, and then starts again, that's also called a relapse. The word carries a note of disappointment — you had made progress, and now some of it has slipped backward.
