To refrigerate something is to make it cold in a refrigerator so it lasts — milk, leftovers, medicine that must stay cool. You are not turning it to ice; you are holding it at fridge temperature. Cooks, doctors, and food labels use the word, and it sounds a little more formal than “put it in the fridge.” Though actually, English (and kitchens) keep two colds apart: refrigerate is the fridge; freeze is the freezer. If a bottle says “refrigerate after opening,” it means the fridge shelf, not the ice box. People say the short verb less often than they say fridge, but on packets and in lab talk refrigerate is the usual choice.
