Refinement has a few uses. For materials, it is the process of making something purer or cleaner, like the refinement of oil or sugar. For plans, ideas, or machines, a refinement is a small change that makes something work better - 'we made a few refinements to the design.' For a person, refinement means polished, elegant manners and good taste, the kind of quality people notice in how someone speaks or behaves.
