A British soldier of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, named for the bright red uniform coat the army wore then. You meet the word in history: the American War of Independence above all, where 'the redcoats' means the British side, and also India, Africa and the Napoleonic wars. It is a nickname rather than an official title, and in American tellings of that war it can sound hostile — the men on the other side. The red coat was given up around 1900 for khaki, once rifles could kill from far away and standing out became fatal, so the word belongs firmly to the past. Two other uses exist. In Britain, a Redcoat with a capital letter is a member of staff at a Butlin's holiday camp, who wears a red jacket and organises games and entertainment for guests — this is well known to British people over about forty. And in Canada, redcoats can mean the , who still wear red.
