A British newspaper that prints its name in white letters on a bright red box at the top of the front page — The Sun, the Daily Mirror, the Daily Star. The word is really a polite way of saying 'tabloid': cheap, hugely popular, full of large photographs, football, television people and short headlines, and not trusted the way the serious papers are. British people use it as a quiet judgement — when someone says 'that was in a red-top', they often mean 'so I would not believe all of it'. It is also used before a noun: 'red-top journalism', 'the red-top press'. This is very much a British word; Americans say 'tabloid' and would not know it. You will meet it mostly in writing about the news media rather than in daily conversation.
