A rectory is the house that goes with a certain kind of church job: the home of the rector, the priest in charge of that parish. In England this is a familiar word; the rectory often stands beside the church, with a garden, and people still say “the old rectory” even when a family, not a priest, lives there now. Though actually, not every priest’s house is a rectory. The name follows the job title. A vicar may live in a ; in the United States, Catholic churches often call the priest’s house a rectory as well. In everyday English outside church life, the word is uncommon. It is a building, not a body part, even though it starts like rectum.
