To recoup money is to get back what you lost or spent. A shop that had a bad month hopes to recoup its losses when sales pick up. A film company wants to recoup the cost of making a movie. It is a money word, a little formal — more at home in business news than at a night market. You recoup an amount, costs, or losses. You do not recoup a person, and you do not usually recoup a feeling. Though actually, some speakers say recoup when they only mean “earn,” even if nothing has been lost yet. Careful use keeps it for money that went out and is coming back.
