A recidivist is a person who commits crimes again after being punished. Police, courts, and newspapers use it as a cold, formal label. It is also an adjective: recidivist behaviour, a recidivist offender — meaning the same returning-to-crime pattern, attached to the person or the act. Though actually, the word can sound as if the person is a type forever, not someone who might stop; that hardness is part of why lawyers like it and why ordinary talk often prefers ‘he offended again.’ Do not mix it with recidivism: the -ist is the human being, the - is the going-back or the rate. You will not hear this much in friendly conversation.
