    Rearward means in or toward the back of something. A rearward seat is a seat at the back of a bus, a car, or a plane. You can also use it like an adverb: if people move rearward, they go toward the back, away from the front. Though actually, most people do not say this word in everyday talk. They say back, at the back, or backwards. Rearward feels a little formal, and you meet it more in writing about the army, about vehicles, or about the body. Backward often means “the opposite way to the way you are facing.” Rearward keeps a clearer picture of a thing that has a front and a back, and you are talking about that back. There is an older military use of rearward as a noun for the back part of an army, but that is rare now; the usual meaning is this “toward the back” one.
