Realpolitik is done by looking at power, money, borders, and what a country can actually get — not by leading with “what is right” or with a beautiful idea. English borrowed the word from German, and it still feels a little foreign on the page (some writers capitalise it; some do not). A leader realpolitik might shake hands with an unpleasant government because that government has oil, or sits on a useful border. Though actually, people also use it as a jab: to call someone’s move realpolitik can mean “you dropped your principles when they became .” It is a newspaper, history, and university word. Ordinary conversation more often says “they did it because they had to” without this term.
