A ravine is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides, often with a stream cutting along the bottom. It is sharper and tighter than an ordinary valley: you go down into it, and the walls rise close beside you. , map-makers, and news reports about floods or landslides use the word. Though actually, people stretch it. A little washed-out ditch may get called a ravine when a careful speaker would say gully, and a huge open gorge may get the same word when canyon would fit better. A ravine sits in the middle — bigger than a ditch, narrower and more sudden than a wide canyon — and water is usually part of the picture, even if you only hear it.

From French ravin 'gully', from Old French ravine 'violent rush of water', from Latin rapina.
借自法文 ravin「溝壑」，源自古法文「洪水猛衝」，水沖出的深谷。
組成Borrowed from French ravin, a gully. Older French ravine meant a violent rush of water — and also robbery — from Latin rapina (English still has the rare word rapine for plunder). The land-shape sense comes from water tearing down a hillside, not from the robbery sense, though they are the same old word.
