A rattler, in informal American speech, is a rattlesnake: the snake that shakes its tail to make a dry buzzing warning. Ranchers, , and western films use the short word the way you might say a nickname — casual, local, not for a science test. You would not usually put it in a formal report. Though actually, rattler can also mean anything that rattles, and in older American talk it sometimes meant a noisy train. In this entry we mean the snake.
