This word has two everyday uses. First, it describes a hard, knocking sound - things 'rattled' when they shook and made a series of short, sharp noises, like coins in a jar or windows in the wind. Second, and very commonly, 'rattled' describes a person who has become nervous, shaken, or thrown off balance by something surprising or stressful - 'the bad news rattled her' means it upset her calm.
