1. 1

Rattan is a climbing palm from hot, wet parts of Southeast Asia. People harvest the long, strong stems and weave them into chairs, tables, baskets, and lamp shades — the light brown furniture that looks like basket-work. If your grandmother has a woven chair on the balcony, it may well be rattan. English borrowed the name from Malay rotan; it was not built from English pieces. It has nothing to do with rats, even though the first letters match. Though actually, shops may also say wicker for this kind of look; wicker is the weaving style, and rattan is one of the plants used to do it.
