A ration is a fixed amount of something — usually food, fuel, or another supply — that a person is allowed to have, especially when there isn't enough for everyone. It's a word most people meet in history class, talking about wartime, when governments limited how much sugar, meat, or petrol each family could buy. As a verb, 'to ration' means to control and limit how much people get of something, so it lasts longer or is shared fairly. People also use it loosely today: 'I'm rationing my phone battery' just means being careful and only using a little at a time.
