A ratchet is a machine part: a wheel or a bar with teeth, plus a little catch, that lets the teeth move one way and then locks so it cannot slip back. You meet it in a ratchet spanner or socket wrench, in a tie-down strap, in a jack, in some clocks. The whole point is one-way movement, click by click. People also use ratchet as a verb: if prices ratchet up, they climb in steps and do not easily fall back — the same one-way picture. That verb is common in news English. There is a separate informal American adjective ratchet meaning rough or low-class; that is a different word that only shares the spelling, and it is rude. This entry is the tool.
