Rat-a-tat is the sound of hard, quick knocks, especially someone knocking on a door: a little burst of knock-knock-knock. It is a sound-word writers put on the page so you can hear it. You may also meet a rat-a-tat from a drum or a , and older writing uses it for a machine gun, but the first picture for a is a door. People often say rat-a-tat-tat, with one more tat, when the burst is longer. It is informal and a bit storybook; in ordinary talk many people just say a knock. It has nothing to do with the animal rat.
