A rapper is someone who performs rap: they speak or chant the words of a rap song to a beat, often with rhyme and a strong rhythm. The word names the person, not the song and not the style as a whole. Some rappers write their own lines; some perform other people’s. It is an everyday word now — rap began as street music, but you will hear rapper on the radio, in news, and in ordinary talk. Though actually, an older, rarer rapper was simply someone who raps on a door (knocks); that is not the sense students meet today.
