Rangoon is the old English name for the big city in Myanmar (Burma) that English now usually calls Yangon. The city did not move; only the name in official English changed. The British wrote down a Rakhine way of saying the Burmese name, and that spelling stuck for a long time. Older books, war stories, and some maps still say Rangoon, and older speakers may still use it. Yangon was the capital for many years; Myanmar later built a new capital inland, but Yangon is still the largest city. Though actually, in Taiwan people often still say 仰光 for this same place, even when the English on the page is Yangon. If you are writing English now, Yangon is the name to use; Rangoon tells you you are reading an older voice.
