Rampton is a high-security hospital in England for people who are very ill in the mind and are also judged to be extremely dangerous to others. It is a hospital, not a prison: the people there are patients, and doctors are trying to treat them. But the walls, doors, and guards are as strict as a prison's, because the public must be kept safe. British news uses the name the way it uses Broadmoor — a place-name that already carries that meaning. Students outside Britain will almost only meet it in news or crime stories.
