A ramification is an extra result that grows out of something you have already done, especially one that was not clear when you first decided. English nearly always uses the plural: the ramifications of a law, a war, a lie, a quiet yes. It is a serious, slightly formal word; in easy talk people more often say consequences or what followed from that. The honest picture is a tree. Your action is the trunk, and later effects split off like branches — some small, some that change everything. Speakers often have the awkward branches in mind, the political, legal, or family trouble that appears later, though the word itself does not have to be negative. It just means what follows, in all directions, including the parts you did not plan for.
