Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year. During this month, adult Muslims who are well enough to do so fast: they do not eat or drink (and they do not smoke) from first light until sunset.

Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, Ramadan moves around our January–December year — some years it falls in a hot summer, some in winter, and the daylight fast is longer when the days are long. It is not “no food for a whole month.” Nights are for food and family.
