Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year. During this month, adult Muslims who are well enough to do so fast: they do not eat or drink (and they do not smoke) from first light until sunset. After sunset they eat, often starting with dates and water, and there are night prayers. The month is also a time of extra kindness, reading the Qur'an, and thinking about people who go hungry. Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, Ramadan moves around our January–December year — some years it falls in a hot summer, some in winter, and the daylight fast is longer when the days are long. It is not “no food for a whole month.” Nights are for food and family. In English we write it with a capital letter: it is a proper name, like July. The English word is borrowed from Arabic رَمَضَان (ramaḍān).
