Raiment means clothes, but it is an old, literary word. You will not hear a shop assistant ask if you want to buy new raiment. It turns up in the Bible, in poems, and in very formal or old-fashioned writing, where a writer wants clothes to sound grand or holy. In everyday English we just say clothes. The history is a : an older word arayment lost its first sound, and the shorter form became raiment. That older word is tied to array, which once also meant to dress someone or set them out in clothes.
