    Ragtime is a kind of American music — and the dancing that went with it — that was popular in the United States in the early 1900s, especially on the piano. The beat is strong but not straight: the tune jumps ahead of the steady beat, or lands in a surprising place, so the time feels a little uneven, a little ‘ragged.’ Scott Joplin is the name students often meet; a rag can also mean one ragtime piece. It is not the same as jazz, though jazz grew up close to it. Today the word belongs mainly to music history, not to how people describe pop on the radio.
