When a coat, jumper, or has raglan sleeves, the sleeve is not sewn on in a square line at the shoulder. It starts up at the neck and runs down in a long seam to the underarm. You can see that diagonal line from the collar to the armpit; the shoulder itself is part of the sleeve. Clothes people like this cut because it is easy to lift your arms, and it looks a little sporty rather than stiff. You say raglan sleeves or a raglan sweater. It is a clothes-and-sewing word, used in shops and pattern books, not slang and not very formal. The name is a person’s name in origin, but in everyday English it no longer means the man.
組成Named after Lord Raglan (1788–1855), a British commander in the Crimean War. The word does not split into smaller English pieces. People often add that he had lost an arm, and that this sleeve made a coat easier to put on — that extra story may be true, but the sure fact is the name.
