Here Raffles is a name, not a prize draw. In E. W. Hornung's 1899 book The Amateur Cracksman, A. J. Raffles is a gentleman who plays cricket for England — and who also breaks into houses and steals jewels. That mix is the whole point: he belongs in the best clubs by day, and at night he is a thief. Later stories copied the type (the charming 'gentleman thief'). In English, people sometimes say 'a Raffles' for that sort of polished criminal, but most readers meet the name as this character. The same spelling is also a famous Singapore surname and hotel; that is a different Raffles.
