    Raffia is a soft, flat fibre from the leaves of a raffia palm. It feels a bit like dry string or ribbon-grass, and people weave it into baskets, hats, and mats, or use it to tie up plants in the garden. Craft shops sell it in bunches, often a yellow-tan colour. It is an ordinary making-things word. Though actually, the palm is from , and English took the name from Malagasy; you do not need that history to buy a roll of it.
