A radiogram, in this old living-room sense, is a large wooden cabinet that held two machines at once: a radio for programmes and a record player for discs. It was a proud piece of sitting-room furniture in the 1950s, especially in Britain — more like a sideboard than like the small speakers we use now. Younger people almost never buy one; you meet the word in period stories, in antique shops, or in a ’s house. Though actually, English also used radiogram for a message sent by radio, like a telegram through the air. That is a different, older office-and-ship meaning. This entry is the furniture.
