Radicchio is a salad plant. It is a kind of chicory. The leaves are red or deep purple, often with white lines, and they taste bitter — not sweet like ordinary lettuce. People eat it raw in salad, or cook it (grill or roast) so the bitter taste becomes softer. The name is Italian; you will see it on restaurant menus and in good vegetable shops. From far away it can look a little like red cabbage, but it is not cabbage, and the taste is sharper.
