Racketeering is the activity: making money through organised crime. In the United States it is also a legal word with a wide net. Someone can be charged with racketeering for a pattern of crimes done as a business — not only protection money, but fraud, threats, bribery, and similar things tied together. Newspapers talk about a racketeering charge when they mean that kind of organised illegal profit, often gangs or a corrupt union. The word is strongly American; British English more often says organised crime or running a . It is heavy and formal. You would not use it for small cheating or one stolen scooter.
