A quizmaster is the person who asks the questions during a quiz — the one with the cards, the buzzer rules, and the right answers. In Britain this is the ordinary word for the host of a quiz show on radio or television, and also for the person who runs a pub quiz. In American English you are more likely to hear host or quiz host, though quizmaster is still understood. It is a job-title word, not a metaphor: it does not mean a very clever student, and it does not mean the teacher who wrote a test, unless that teacher is actually standing there asking the questions. The feeling is light and public: games, prizes, a microphone. Though actually, the “master” piece is the old “person in charge” sense, the same idea as in other show titles, not “master” as in school grades or as in “I have mastered English.”
