Quixotic ideas or plans are not practical. They grow out of a big, noble hope of making the world better, but they do not fit how the world actually works. A quixotic scheme is not just silly, and it is not just wrong: it is idealistic in a way that ignores cost, power, and likely failure. The word is a little literary. You meet it in essays, reviews, and careful news more than in the playground. It can be fond — we loved his quixotic campaign — or gently critical: a quixotic waste of time. It does not mean crazy, and it does not mean evil. Though actually, English borrowed the feeling from a book character who charged at windmills because he thought they were giants: the hope is brave, and also a bit blind. There is a rare use as a noun for such a person, but almost all real use is the adjective.
