Quinine is a bitter drug, first taken from the bark of a South American tree, used to treat fevers — most malaria. It is also the thing that makes tonic water taste bitter. The old story is that people in hot countries drank tonic with gin so the medicine went down more easily; though actually, the amount in a supermarket tonic today is tiny, not a real treatment. The word belongs to medicine and to that drink. It is a little formal as a drug name, but ordinary when you talk about tonic. Everyday English almost never uses it as a verb.

組成Either from Spanish quina (a short form of quinaquina, Cinchona bark) + English -ine, an ending on names of plant drugs; or from French quinine, built the same way. Spanish quinaquina and French quinquina both come from Quechua kina-kina, a doubled form of kina, “bark” — this bark. Scholars are not sure which European road English took; both lead to the same Andean word.
