A quince is a hard yellow fruit, about as big as a large apple, but bumpier, with a strong sweet smell when it is ripe. You almost never eat it raw: it is too hard and too sharp on the tongue. People cook it — into jelly, jam, or a paste — and it often turns a pretty pink. It is an old kitchen fruit in Europe; in Taiwan you will meet the name more in a recipe than in a night market. This word is the fruit. Spanish quinceañera looks similar because Spanish quince means fifteen; that party word is not this fruit.

組成From Middle English quynce, from Old French cooing (modern French coing), from Latin mālum cotōneum / mālum Cydonium, “the apple of Cydonia” — Cydonia was a place on Crete. It is not from the Spanish number fifteen.
