A quiff is the hair at the front of the head that is made to stand up above the forehead, instead of lying flat. Dictionaries often picture a man, and that is how the word first lived in Britain — 1950s rock and roll, a comb, a bit of grease, the front rising in a wave. Though actually you will see a quiff on women too now, and people stretch it: some say it for any front bit that is lifted, even a small one. It is an everyday, slightly informal word, much more at home in British English. American speakers more often talk about hair swept high and back; a quiff is really that standing front. You use it about a haircut, not in a science book.

組成The origin is not settled. One old account treats quiff as a variant of whiff; another says it is unknown. Use that as a story about the name, not as a sure family link.
