Quietude is calmness, peace, and quiet as a kind of atmosphere you can step into — the still of a temple courtyard at dawn, the hush of hills after a city week. It names the state, not a person. The word is literary and a little old-fashioned; most people simply say quiet or peace. Writers reach for quietude when they want you to feel a deep, settled stillness, not just “please lower your voice.” It is gentle, almost solemn; it does not fit a noisy joke. Though actually, it is a richer, rarer cousin of quiet, not a stricter rule about sound: a place can have quietude even if a bird sings, because the feeling is rest, not silence as a measurement. If you use it in a text message to a friend, it may sound as if you have swallowed a poem. That is not wrong, only a little grand.
