Quietism is when a person — or a whole way of thinking — accepts the situation and does not try to change it. In politics and ordinary argument it can sound like a criticism: you sat still while harm went on. In religion it has a longer, more careful story. Quietism was also a Christian teaching, especially in the 1600s, that a person should rest inwardly, wait on God, and not strive so hard with their own will. Some church leaders later attacked that teaching as too passive. So the word carries both a spiritual stillness and, in later use, a worldly shrug. It is a formal, idea-word, not something you toss into small talk. Though actually, it is not the same as peace, and not the same as laziness: a quietist may feel very serious about not pushing. If you only need “they didn’t fight back,” a plainer sentence is often kinder and clearer.
