A questioning look or face is asking without words. The eyes, a small head-tilt, a pause — they say “I don’t quite get this,” or “I’m not sure that’s right,” or “please tell me more.” It can be gentle (I need information) or a little doubtful (I have doubts), but it is not an angry look and it is not a “you are a bad person” look. Though actually, this spelling has another big job: as a noun, questioning is the act of asking many questions, including the hard kind at a police station. That is the same family, different use. The look is an adjective: a questioning glance, a questioning expression. Do not mix it with questionable, which means “this might be wrong or dishonest.” A questioning look only means there is a gap or a doubt.
