A quatercentenary is the day or the year that falls exactly four hundred years after something happened. A city might mark the quatercentenary of its founding; a college might mark the quatercentenary of a writer’s birth. It is a formal word for posters, newspapers, and speeches. Most people, if they are just talking, will say “the 400th anniversary,” which means the same thing and is easier. You will not need it in ordinary conversation. The idea in the word is “four times a hundred years.”
